Behind the Production of the Enamelled Cast Iron Casserole

Behind the Production of the Enamelled Cast Iron Casserole

A good cast iron casserole is not just about what you cook in it, but also about how it is made.

We wanted to create an enamelled cast iron casserole that combines function and tradition – and one you never need to replace again.

But that requires craftsmanship that can match the ambition.

From Recycled Iron to Kitchen Classic

Our casseroles are produced in northern France – a region renowned for both its culinary heritage and its exacting standards of craftsmanship. Since the 1920s, the foundry has refined the art of casting and enamelling cast iron, and it is this historical expertise that our new cast iron casserole is built upon, with several steps in the production process still carried out by hand.

Each casserole is made not only with the very best quality in mind, but also with a clear focus on the environment: up to 80% of the raw material consists of recycled iron, given a new lease of life by being blended in precise proportions and melted down into new cast iron casseroles with remarkable heat-retention properties.

Individual Sand Moulds

Every casserole is cast in its own unique sand mould, which is pressed and used only once. Once the cast iron has been melted, it is carefully poured into the mould and left to cool. The mould is then broken apart, and the sand is recycled to form new ones.

When the raw casserole emerges, it is ground and sand-blasted to create a smooth surface free from sharp or uneven edges. This is an essential part of the preparation, ensuring that the enamel can later bond properly and create a smooth, durable finish.

Hand Enamelling

The quality of the enamel is what truly sets a fine cast iron casserole apart from an inferior one. Poor-quality enamel is fragile and short-lived – and once it chips or cracks, there is sadly no way to repair it. That is why it was so important to us never to compromise on enamel quality.

Rather than relying on machine production, the enamel is applied by hand by skilled craftspeople. Each casserole receives two or three coats, depending on the colour, and is then fired at around 800 °C, where the layers fuse together. This creates a durable glass enamel – also known as porcelain enamel – which protects the cast iron from rust and acid, and provides a smooth, easy-to-clean surface.

It is this process that makes the casserole beautiful, durable, and resistant – and completely free from PFAS and heavy metals.

French Soul, Danish Design

While the craftsmanship is French, the design is developed in Denmark. The shape is simple, timeless, and functional, and the colours have been carefully chosen so that the casserole can grace the dining table just as comfortably as it sits on display in the kitchen as part of the décor.

Every detail has been thoughtfully considered – from the heat-resistant stainless steel knob with its ergonomic shape, to the tight-fitting lid with condensation ridges that ensure even moisture throughout cooking.

We believe in creating products that last a lifetime, so you only need to buy them once. From melted, recycled iron in France to a beautiful, functional casserole on your stove – it is a true classic that honours craftsmanship, tradition, and good cooking.
